3 way split
Hey – I’m trying to recreate the classic ‘Dallas’ opening credits 3 way split. E.g

I can do this by making 3 masks and allowing a slight gap between them to give the fine black line between the 3 splits. I have quite a few to create though and don’t know how to do it without having to redraw the masks every time.
Each image may need scaling, so I figure that coping the masks is not going to work.
Any suggestions for a more efficient way of repeatedly creating this effect would be much appreciated.

at this point, the easiest way may be to just use the layers (with masks) that you already have as track mattes for the new images as you bring them in….
so lets say you need to replace the middle image. drag a new image into the comp directly below the layer that has the mask to reveal the middle image. then, in the modes section of the switches/modes layer panel, choose for that layer to use the layer above it as a track matte (alpha). this should ‘crop’ the new image to the alpha of the above image, but leave the image itself available for scaling/positioning independent of the mask shape.

Say you want a 5 pixel black border for the framework. Methinks, you can do it with a little precise sizing of the layers and just one mask, the one for the middle picture, and add a black stroke to that layer.
So make the flanking layers 10 pixels less in height than the comp to give you a 5 pixel black border (and slide it left or right to give you 5 pixels on the outer edge.
Then the middle picture, the top layer, has a rectangular mask, pull the bottom/top vetrices left or right to give you the trapezoid you want, then add Stroke, black at 5 pixels.
You can change the middle picture size by resizing the mask, double click for a PhotoShop-type Transformation box, or move individual vertices, to get the trapezoid you want.
The only work is to initially crop/resize the left and right panel images/footage, but this should be a never changing standard size, so pretty easy after you settle on the standards you want. You could do that in precomps.
Should work and be pretty hassle-free once you set it up.
