Copyright issues for dance show
I have a client that wants to shoot a dance show, which happens to require music. What are the rules for permission and getting rights to use songs on the show?

You need to get permission to use any copyrighted music.
You need to be a bit more specific in what is happening to the video. Is it going to be sold ? Is it for archival purposes?

It is going to be aired on a local tv network with advertising being sold. Is it a difficult process to contact the record labels? Who at the label should I talk to? You have to get permission for each song? Are the major labels going to charge or do they want their music to be heard?

In the old days, if you were recording natsound of the event which played the music, you were ok (that was news though). Could be different now.

It is very different now. I’d call the TV station that’s wanting to run the show. They’ll have a lawyer on staff that should be consulted. The Station may be thinking their blanket annual license agreements with BMI and ASCAP cover this. IANaL, but while it might possibly cover them, it doesn’t cover YOU at all.
Wanna make big money in TV? Get a degree in communications and entertainment/copyright law. It’s like patenting oxygen.
