Rotating text about an image
Following the BCC vegas tutorials and have worked through the text rotation and animation.
I would like to take it one step further.. Is it possible to have text rotating about an image. In a previous post, JR explained how to import and work with an EPS of a logo. I would like to have some text rotating about the image/logo. Is it possible to position in image and then in some way vary the transparency of the text as it rotates, or am I approaching it from the wrong perspective?
if someone could explain the approach I can experiment.

Yes you can do this and you’re on the right track with transparency. In fact I was going to make a tutorial on this very subject but I don’t have the time to make it tonight (sorry)
It’s an illusion because you really can’t do this in 3D as separate tracks. So what you do is place the same object on a track above and below the text. Add a Composite Level envelope to the top track so that you can turn it on and off. When you want the text to go behind the object, turn the composite level to 100% so the object hides the text. Then when you want the text to go in front of the object, turn the composite level to 0% so the object is behind the text. It’s kind of hard to explain but easier to show in a tutorial.
OK, that tutorial just got bumped up a few notches on my list of to-do’s. 😉

Never thought of the duplicate image – I was trying to position the text in 3d space, and thinking that varying the Z value would place it in front or behind another object and then to mess about with transparency.
Did as you suggested – worked perfectly..

Yea, your approach would have worked if both objects were sharing the same 3D space but they don’t so the only way to control what is on top is with the track positions. Since you can’t change track positions, you must make a copy and play with opacity.
It’s a pretty good illusion when done right. 😉
