  • PR and RED OpenGL Filters issue

Posted by Enzo Ruscigno on January 28, 2009 at 9:48 pm

I purchased CS4 Production Premium in full (PR 4.0.1) and i have RED 4.3.1 & BCC 5.0.1 in trial (OS Vista32 Ultimate).

RED OpenGL memory test return incorrect memory value and the value is not the same of BCC OpenGL memory test.

    This mistake generate:
    – PR “Not Responding” if I apply any BCC OpenGL Filter.
    – Cannot find OpenGL filters in RED Stand-alone mode.
    – AE Work very Well.

    Any solution ? Tanks.

    Hi Enzo,

There are a few issues that you bring to the table which I will try to explain as best as I can.

    • RED 4.3 and BCC OpenGL filters

RED 4.3 is unable to use the OpenGL filters that are in BCC. The fact that the entire OpenGL category of filters is missing from RED is intentional. That is something that we hope to resolve with a future update of RED.

    • Premiere Pro and BCC OpenGL filters

Premiere Pro is unable to support BCC OpenGL filters. This is why Premiere hangs when you apply one of the BCC OpenGL filters to a clip in that host.

    • Proposed workaround

After Effects supports both RED and BCC and I suggest that for any of your effects work which requires use one of the OpenGL filter effects, that you perform this task within the After Effects host environment. Then pass the filtered clip over to Premiere Pro for editing into a timeline.

I hope this helps explain the phenomenon you are seeing and provides you with a reasonable workflow solution to the problem.

    Cheers,

    Peter.

    Hi Peter,

Unfortunately After Effects supports BCC only.
If i start RED from AE the OpenGL memory test pop-up “hang” AE.
If i start RED from PR…”crash”…See my post on Jan 18, 2009.

    Pr CRASH…
    – Premiere Pro Debug Event
–Premiere Pro has encuntered an error
    –[….SrcVideoFrameFactory.cpp-346]

    IN DEFINITIVE SUMMARY:
    – BCC work in AE only (using workaround in my post on Jan 20, 2009)
    – RED work in stand-alone mode only and “without” OpenGL filters.

If my trial period expire before Boris patch…i tested the software bugs…not the Boris RED and BCC Plug-ins.

Can i extend my trial period after intall the future Boris patch ?

    Cheers,
    Enzo.

    Hi Enzo,

I’m not having any problems at all using RED 4.3.1 in After Effects or Premiere Pro on my systems, and I use both Windows and Mac. Perhaps there is something with your system configuration that is causing the problems that you are seeing. I don’t know. What I can offer is that if you get in touch with our support department that someone from the group will do their best to solve the mystery.

You can get in touch with the support department by sending them an email at support@borisfx.com.

    Cheers,

    Peter.

    HI Peter,

The Boris LAB know my problem…
Answer: “The problem has very recently been reported by a couple of other users, and a work-around has not yet been established”.

My trial period (RED4 and BCC5) is expired.
    Cannot test any future solution.
This is not good…i am a Boris RED 3 and BCC 4 REGISTRED USER.

Upgrade or not upgrade…this is the question…

    Cheers,

    Enzo.
