Ok so I feel a little silly here because I know I have done this right before. But I’m trying to render some images from Maya to use in After Effects with the 3D channel effects. I’m rendering RLA’s with the depth channel. I’ve also disabled the “auto render clipping plane” on the camera.

When I bring the images into AE, it sees a depth channel. But the range is only between 0-1. Obviously there’s not enough room there for the effects to do anything. Are there issues with AE and RLA’s? Is working on a MAC the problem? I also tried this with IFF’s but they didn’t have any z channel that AE could read.

I feel like there’s just one little thing that I’m missing. Any ideas?

[Stephanie Benvenuto] “But the range is only between 0-1.”

What bit depth did you render out of Maya? What bit depth is your AE project set to?

After Effects is set to 8. Where do I set my bit depth for Maya? I don’t see it in the render settings.

I’m not familiar with Maya, you might need to ask in the Maya forum.

Since the depth channel is grayscale, it would benefit you to render it out in 32bpc as this would give you more levels of depth. You will also need to work in AE in at least 16bpc and possibly 32bpc to benefit.
