AE CS3 crashes in Mac OS 10.4.11
anybody else having problems with CS3 on Mac OS 10.4.11?
it just freezes on me 5+ times a day, sometimes when i’m actually doing work, sometimes when i’m just sitting here staring at the screen… and i have to do a forced reboot.
has anybody heard of any compatibility problems with CS3 and Tiger? AE 6.5 and 7 worked fine no problem.

Running fine here with OSX 10.4.11 and AE CS3 8.0.2.27

When you say ‘forced reboot’ do you mean of AE or of your computer?
An application freezing should almost never require a reboot of your computer under OS X. There are certain instances where you may have 3rd party drivers/system extensions installed that may conflict with a program in such a way as to cause the computer to choke, but this is rare. Have you tried running CS3 in Safe Boot (hold shift while starting up)? This will disable any non-standard Apple system processes at startup. If you experience better results then consider uninstalling 3rd party drivers.
If you do not experience an improvement, I would suggest running AE with your Activity Monitor (Applications > Utilities > Activity Monitor) open and visible until the crash, and see if you notice anything odd.

thanks for responding so quickly…
the mac just freezes, and i have to reboot the computer. i tried updating to the version of AE the previous poster recommended, but i crashed during the install too.
i’m beginning to suspect it’s a system/hardware problem, because i’d quit AE by then.. i also cannot boot up from the startup disks (10.4) to run disk utility, i get the ‘kernal panic’ screen and i have to zap the pram to get the mac back. – but i have to say this all started when i upgraded to AE 8.
i will try your safe boot up idea. and the activity monitor (although i wouldn’t know what to look for…)

kinda sounds like a bad or coflicting ram issue. the older g5’s were very sensitive to mixed ram brands and such. Not sure what you are running but you can easily find out by removing all but one set of matched ram for a day or so and see if the problem still exists.

Boot from your OS X Install Disc (hold down ‘c’ with the disk in the drive while booting) and run Disk Utility from there. Verify your system disk and perform any necessary repairs, also repair permissions while you’re in there.
Also, if your computer is older it may include a separate disk with the label ‘Software Restore’ or ‘Apple Hardware Test’ on it somewhere that you can put into your computer and choose to boot up from (hold option) to run the Apple Hardware Test. This may also be accessible by putting your OS X Install disc in the drive and holding ‘d’ during start up (I believe this was for much older computers)… Or it may not be available at all (sorry for the vague direction, Apple changed access to AHT a lot).
You haven’t installed new RAM or any other components recently? What model Mac do you have?

thanks for all the suggestions chaps…
just to expand a bit: yes i have run hardware test (nothing revealed) and no i can’t boot up from the system disk without incurring the kernal panic freeze, so i can’t run disk utility. and finally, no third party ram. all apple, all worked fine for the last few years…

theres always the reset button on the main cpu board. i cant remember what it does exactly, but i think it just resets the main board. its worth a shot and it wont hurt any thing. also you can make sure while your in there that all the boards are seated and check for any warning lights, the lights tell a code light your “engine on fire” light in your car..
