I’m interested in drawing simple diagrams over HD video (not unlike to what John Madden does on Monday Night Football). for science show we are making Is After FX the best platform for this? Are there some methods that offer a more sophisticated look? What drawing tablet is recommended?

    Thanks for the help?

AE is fine for this, probably best on the desktop. Keep in mind, it won’t be real-time — you have to make the video, do the drawing, waqit to render the whole clip, then burn that to DVD, lay off to tape, whatever.

If you do use AE, look for the Paint or Vector paint effects, or the write-on effect. A more sophisticated look could be achieved by making a mask shape (and refining the shape) then applying (and animating) the stroke effect to make it draw on. Check the COW for tutorials on these effects.

The best tablet is the Wacom — I like the 6×9 Intuos3. The 9×12 was too big for my desk.
