We currently are using a Canon XH A1 camera for our video projects in a corporate environment. Lately, we’ve been getting a lot of reuests to broadcast video conferences using this camera – webcams just won’t produce the desired results. I’m concerned about the additional wear and tear on our primary (and expensive) equipment, so I’ve received approval to purchase an inexpensive backup camera to use for the video conferencing as well as a second/backup camera for our video shoots.
What model of HD camcorder would you recommend? We’re looking in the $500 price range.

The canon MiniDV HDV cameras are super popular and can be found for about that on ebay. They are small and unimpressive, but for B-roll cameras, they are great little hand helds with good image quality.
