  • Footage gets darker after 14 frames during render

Posted by Max Kaiser on March 3, 2008 at 8:01 pm

I’m having a strange render issue – any quicktime footage in my comps gets darker after 14 frames.

This happens even when I create a new project with no color management, drop in some fresh footage and create a new comp w/ no filters. In preview everything looks fine. When I render the comp the first 14 frames are correct, and everything gets slightly darker from that point forward.

I get the same result whether I’m importing dvcprohd footage, Prores footage or DV footage. And I get the same result whether I render out to a QT file of any codec or an image sequence.

If I create a comp with nothing but a solid, there’s no color shift. If I put QT footage alongside the solid, the solid remains the same while the QT footage gets darker.

    Any thoughts? I’m running AE 8.0.2.27 and QT 7.4.1(14) on a 2x3ghz quad-core intel. OS is 10.5.1.

I should mention, this problem began last night when I was still running QT 7.1. I updated QT today hoping it would fix the problem… no dice of course.

I guess nobody else has seen this…? Strange.

    i haven’t heard of this one…

the good news is you seem to have tested it well enough to determine that it seems to be a problem with ae interpretting the color of the footage 14 frames into the render for some reason.

is color managment turned off…. file>project settings, then set working space to ‘none’.

did you try rendering to a non-quicktime format like an image sequence of some sort (the photoshop output module preset would be fine)? does that effect the color shift?

do you see the color shift in other applications (fcp, qt, etc) or just in ae when you reimport the render?

    Hi Kevin;

    Yeah it’s a strange one…

    >is color managment turned off….

    Yup, there’s no color management.

    >did you try rendering to a non-quicktime format like an image
    >sequence of some sort (the photoshop output module preset would
    >be fine)? does that effect the color shift?

I did, and it happens regardless of the output format.

    >do you see the color shift in other applications (fcp, qt, etc)

Before I render, there’s no color shift in the footage in any program. In AE, the footage looks OK when I preview. After I render, the color shift shows up in all programs, qt, fcp etc.

Pretty weird huh? I’m working around it by using time remapping but it’s an ugly solution.

if you haven’t already, i would post this issue on adobe’s ae forum. they may have a work around or be able to identify a conflict somewhere with you setup.

the only thing i can think of to try would be to boot in safe mode… shut down the system, hit the power button and then hold the shift key until your mac starts booting (usually says something about being in safe mode).

then, if ae runs in safe mode (i’m not sure it will), try a render and see what happens.

i suppose you could try some of the other standard fixes for odd after effects behavior first…

    -remove third party plugins
-remove all qt components form the library/quicktime and users/user name/library/quicktime folders
-run disk utility to repair permissions and verify disk, if needed repair disk using osx install disk
-possibly run the hardware test from the osx install disk (i think it needs to be the original disk that came with the system), run the extended test, it will take a while…
-then try safe mode as a last ditch effort.

I have this same exact problem. My footage changes after about 14 frames. Did you find a fix for this? I’m also just having a problem matching the color space between AE and FCP, any advice?

I have the same problem too… but my QT footage (DVCProHD, HDV, whatever) gets darker after 3 frames. I found another post that had narrowed it down to using multi-processor render, which I use a lot. So I think the discrepancy between my 3 frames and others 14 frames have to do with the number of CPUs… just a hunch. In any case, has anyone found a fix? I’ve just updated to QT 7.4.5, problem remains. Thanks-

I too got the level shift on renders and solved the problem by turning off multiprocessor support. Would be interested in finding a solution. I’m wondering if the level shift is related to the gamma/color shift I get when trying to do a round trip from FCP to AE and back again, using DVCPROHD. What a nightmare.

i get a very similar problem, only mine tends to get brighter, and the number of frames varies every time i render (even the same project – with no alterations made!).

I am editing in PAl, on a Quad G5 running OS 10.4.11. qt 7.5

I am having the same problem. Any fixes out there yet? I had this problem once before and someone suggested that it might be the fact that I copied effects to multiple clips. I rebuilt the same comp without copying any effects and it did work. But now I built this comp from scratch without copying anything and I’m getting the problem again. I am using pro res 422 and don’t know if that is the issue.

    Any help would be great!
    Thanks.
