    Regarding the “vertical” spot:

Since it looks as if everything is a flat plane, I’d say it could probably be done in AE with only Trapcode’s 3D stroke for the ski lift.

Are the camera moves too tough for AE, requiring the use of a 3D app? Maybe not, especialy if each axis of the camera is tied to a null, allowing you to move the camera along each axis independently. That may not have been done, of course.

The growing trees could be done with animated masks.

Aside from that, it’s all about style and motion, not software tools.

    my 2 cents,
    Steve

I suppose theorhetically it could have been a camera that stayed at the origin and just was keyframed to look around. Then “scenes” were grouped together and positioned in certain areas in space as the camera turned and looked at them. Then those scenes were not used next time the camera was looking that direction.

As far as the rest of it, good ol’ fashined great artistry, pre-planning, and animation talent. Not difficult for you to do technically speaking. Imagine if someone gave you a folder full of all the files you needed: the palm trees, the skiiers, the mountains, the ink drip, etc. It wouldn’t seem so insurmountable then. Put them in 3D space and use masking and changing scale etc. to make things move, reveal, etc…

Like Steve said, it’s not difficult technically, it’s just a lot of man power, original ideas, and great design.

Here is the thing. I know not a drop about motion graphics theory or motion graphics. I am one who always wants to know the who’s, what, where, when and why. I always want to know the theory behind certain concepts. I am trying to fiddle around with AE with little result. I am halfway through creating motion graphics with after effects, blah blah. I do understand film theory. Using that, I can say that the razamadazz in this quicksilver commercial is not so much interconnecting 3d space as much as using the human brain and eyes to get the viewer to believe this is all connceted(leading lines, mass/color in motion). The only thing I don’t understand(and started a post about it once to no avail) is how do you get the camera to transition from one comp to another with no visable seam??????

Maybe all the elements are 3D layers in one comp.

If not, and the comps all have transparent backgrounds, you’ll avoid seeing a perspective shift from comp to comp if you collapse each comp so its 3D layers are in 3d space … not a big flat plane.

… if I understood your question.
