Can I use a postcard?
Posted by James Williams on February 28, 2008 at 6:04 amI need view from the sky of a city. I can easily find one on a postcard. Can i use the postcard picture in a video presentation that I ultimately intend to sell. Would it simply be a matter of giving credit at the end or is that even necessary.

February 28, 2008 at 7:14 pmHi. He means that you cannot use that photograph without written permission and most likely without paying a fee to the owner of the photograph. This is a big issue with production companies. You cannot just use whatever you find in a production. Everything and I mean everything requires permission. Your best bet would be to try to contact the maker of the postcard and see what permissions and fees are necessary. If the fees are above what you can afford, you might want to look at royalty free images. There are a number of sources out there. I hope this helps.

February 28, 2008 at 7:57 pmYes JK,
That helps much better than, no. Given the info on the card I would then seek permission to use the image. I need a picture(overhead view from the air) of this mid-size city i’m in. I’ll try a stock photo house to see if they have one I could buy. By the way is there a particular source you might suggest. I’m Goggling now.
Thanks much

February 28, 2008 at 8:55 pmWhy not use free public domain sources? USGS and NASA have aerials of the entire planet, a little digging and you can get what you want there for free.

No offense, but you did ask a yes or no question, hence simple response.
