  • Layer Order in 3D

    Hey!

It will be hard to explain this without pictures…

But I seen a problem when using layers in 3D-space at the same time as “3D effects” like CC Particle world or shatter that have to be aplied to 2d layers.

The layer order doesnt matter in 3d-space until you aply for example Particles. Depending on where you put the layer with that effect the result can be that a layer in the back in 3d-space renders above the others and so on.

An other thing is that the particles itself depending on where you have the layer that make some particles are masked even though they are closer to the camera then the “blocking” layers.
For example if I have a stream of partivles growing in the 3d-space in the middle of two layers with diffrent z-position i cant make it look real. I’ll have make ALL the particles be in front of the front layer or back of it or in front/back of the back layer – not like the grow from the middle and passes the front and back layer.

Is there any work arounds for this?

If you’re using Trapcode Particular, you can choose an Obscuration Layer in the effect’s settings. Just one, though.

Otherwise AE is not set up to allow 3D-effects-on-2D layers to interact with 3D layers. You’d have to carefully plan your animation, then, when all motion is determined, edit>split the appropriate layers and switch the layer order when necessary, or use Track Mattes to hide certain layers and show others.

This is when people start to learn 3D apps. AE has its limitations, and many of them center around 3D-ness.

    Thanks for the tips, Steve!

Luckily I do use trapcode, the Obscuration Layer do help a lot!
