is standard JPEG ok for modifying individual frames?
I’ve got 23.98 fps 1920×1080 prores 422 video files, and need to do some manual touch ups on a few frames.. I just wanted to see if there’s any thing “bad” about my current workflow:
1. choose the frame in FCP
2. select export using quicktime conversion
3. choose still image with my 23.98 fps rate and choose JPEG
4. open in photoshop + make changes
5. export to JPEG with the highest compression setting
6. place the frame back on the timeline and trim it so it’s actually only the length of 1 frame.Is this ok? Is there a better format I should be using other than JPEG?

JPEG is not good for this. PNG is better…then TIFF. JPEG is highly compressed.

Well, I ended up seeing that I could just export PSD, which I thought would be ok…
One thing I noticed which is super weird, after manually adjusting a few frames in photoshop and resaving the psds, when I brought them back into FCP, there is a definite change in the color profile. The modified PSDs are slightly darker than the original footage, so I had to use color correction to try to make them match as close as possible… Is there a reason for this change in color?

Did you change from RGB to CMYK? How about trying the PNG option I offered?

I have done rotoscoping work the hard way, exporting to Photoshop, then re-importing. You can export a “frame movie” from FCP7 and import that into Photoshop, and it may make it easier for you to make your alterations to multiple frames within a section several seconds long. It can be tedious, unless you’re in the right frame of mind.
BTW, the new draw mask tools in FCPX make this SO much easier, it’s ridiculous.
