Need to know how to export raw / close as possible to original footage from FCP 7!! Please!
Hi everyone!
I don’t even know if this is possible, but I am hardcore hoping it is! I need to export clips of my film for my VFX artist in as close to raw / original format as possible / as high of original quality.
The footage is from an Arri Alexa.
In file info on any given clip is says: Dimensions: 2048 x 1152, Codecs: ap4h, Linear PCM, Timecode, Color Profile: HD (1-1-1),
and after importing to Final Cut, it shows compressor: Apple ProRes 4444.How can I best export as close to the original footage as possible for my VFX artist?

If it will come back to you from the artist for more integration, I’d say keep everything ProRes 444, rather than going back to the Alexa’s original spec.

ap4h is another term for ProRes4444.
simply putting the clip into FCP7 won’t change it.now you could export from your timeline, and if you export as a Quicktime movie, current settings, it should be a direct transfer, no quality loss at all,
but that will lose possibly important metadata.you can export from the viewer and maintain that metadata,
but best i think would be to use the media manager.
you can do a whole group of clips in one go,
keep all the metadata, and have no risk of accidental changes (a filter you added and didn’t remove, for isntance)select the clip(s) in the timeline,
File Menu > Media Manager
use COPY
delete unused (to trim to just the used sections)
add handles for safetyif you have done some basic composting, like simple layering of clips, then you would be wise to create a new project as well,
then your VFX person can use that as a guide,
or you can export it as an XML which they would use.talk to them about it all, too.

Export from timeline works fine though.

works for me.
i remember we were prepping files for VFX a couple of years ago,
and I’m pretty sure we were trimming using MM.
just tried it now, and it works.
i might try again tomorrow with some more files.MM wont trim if you don’t have a reel#
maybe that’s what’s happened on your end?nick

Alexa clips have Reel Name embedded.
How old is your footage? Mine is from 2010 so if yours is newer they should’ve fixed this codec bug in camera firmware.

yeah, mine’s from this year.
my older film are in storage, so can’t check them,
but pretty sure that even a few years go i was doing this.nick
