  Best iMac setup for FCP editing

  Hi guys.

  Im about to buy a new iMac for 1080P ProRes(4:2:2) video editing in FCP 7.0.3 and compositing/effects in AE 5.5.

  The only thing that matters to me is render time.

  Therefore I have decided to go with the i7 3,4GHz

  1. Will it result in much faster rendering upgrading from 8GB -> 12GB or even 16 GB RAM ?
  2. Is it worth upgrading the 5970M HD from 1GB -> 2GB ?
  3. Should I go for the SSD 256GB setup? Will this increase rendering or is this only influencing the start up/importing of clips speed ?

  Nope. Rendering speed is processor based.

  Iffy. Motion would benefit…and a few FCP plugins would too. But that’s it.

  That would increase the speed for launching the OS (starting up the computer), and launching the apps. Won’t affect rendering at all.

  Will the money be better spend if I buy an internal 7200RPM drive for the OS and an external Lacie Thunderbolt for my media material ?

  Internal 7200, and yes, TB external would be a wise choice.
