I had avi files put on an external hard drive. When I go to import into FCP, if I put the import on Show all files the AVI files are not greyed out. When I “choose” the avi file FCP says that
“i file, 0 access denied, 1 unknown” How do I import this file?

    FCP works with Quicktime files.
    Convert it to quicktime first.

How do I convert it to Quicktime? The manual tells about exporting AVI files to Quicktime but not about HOW to convert avi to QT files.

Through any compression software. You should invest in some.
However, “Compressor” comes with FCP and should do the job for you.
Also, QT pro will export it to another format if you can open and read the AVI on your system.
After Effects will also do it for you.

The best way is converting it to Apple ProRes 422. FCP can read it easily. And here’s a guide about how to finish this conversion. https://sony-mts-converter.com/2011/07/backup-hd-video-to-mac-and-convert-tm900-mts-to-prores-422-for-fcp-x-simultaneously/
