  Final Cut Express: Offline media, XML files and compressing video

  I’ve had a bunch of problems with FCE.

  For starters it won’t recognize my camera (canon gl2). So to upload footage I have resorted to using iMovie.

  iMovie is okay. I do i rough edit and then export it as an XML file, upload it on FCE and go from there.

  Problem 1) I come back to the saved FCE file the next day. It says that media is offline. I have no saved file from the orginal uploaded video, apart from this XML file. When I tell FCE to use the XML file to link the video, it continues to tell me that it is corrupt. The file appears to be text only.

  Question 1) How do I save an iMovie file?

  Problem 2) I tried another way: I uploaded video like before, using iMovie and exporting it to Final Cut as an XML file. To avoid the problem with unlinked media I exported the FCE file as a quicktime movie. Now when I go back to edit the quicktime movie it is impossible to work with. It is 2 of small clips, so it runs very slow.

  Question 2) How can I compress video using FCE?
