Good 3d Program
Hi Guys:
We are bumping up our production facility and are looking to buy a good 3d modeling program. With all the ones out there I was hoping to get a good since of what the industry standard is. The reason why I ask is because freelancers will be coming to us and working in our studios. I want to have a program that is widely used.

Autodesk Maya and Softimage XSI are pretty high end. You’ll also want to look into renderers. Both mentioned above come with mental ray, which is also top shelf software, but not everybody has the rocket science degree required to work with it. You can also look at 3DStudio Max (Maya’s little brother). Now sure how any of these rank in the gaming industry though.

Each app has its camps. C4D for motion graphics, Lightwave for all-round indie (and Star Trek), Max for corporate and games, Maya for character, Houdini for effects, and Soft for, er, lotsa high-end stuff. Just modelling? Rhino maybe. Of course, I could be wrong on the aforementioned list, but there is no one industry standard.
Anyway, try CGTalk maybe — we’re AE-centered here. 🙂

Since you posted this question in the AE forum, I guess integration of your 3D apparatus with AE matters. If that’s the case, it might be good to consider Cinema4D. Besides excellent intergration with AE it offers userfriendlyness, strong features, since shortly the Vray renderer.
But I guess it also depends on what sort of jobs you’re doing, you did not mention that.
