  • Outputting to BETA SD & Preserving the Matte?

    Hi,

I was trying to make a graphic background with in FCP (Version 6.0.6) that could be played back from BETA SD and put over live video without having to be keyed. I used some elements from Live Type, that worked fine in the FCP sequence. They didn’t need any FX, just popped over top of the video no problem.

When I print it to tape it doesn’t preserve that functionality. How can I do that or do I need to use the Matte effect?

You can put your graphic over a “super-black” background, then use luminance keying thrua switcher or other NLE to key out everything below a certain brightness level. Or you can put the graphic over a green or blue background and later chromakey it in thru the switcher. But there is no way I know to put alpha channel info into a BetacamSp tape.

How do you generate super black in FCP?

Hmmm. Don’t know for sure. I guess I’d use a slug, modify it in the 3-way color corrector. Make sure your graphics layer’s darkest element stays above 7.5 IRE on the built-in wave form monitor, and that the black layer reads zero. That’s a guess.

The problem Is that is not possible to generate a Superblack in FC. They do not exist in digital video.
Do what Marks suggests, but rise the blacks a little bit, so when played from tape, they can low the blacks and generate the super-black for the luma-key.
