Clip Lag Between Edits
Hello everyone! I’ve been looking for the answer to my question online, but I can’t quite find something that seems to pertain to me directly, so I thought I would ask.
I was recently brought on to edit a short video project. All my files are .mov files that are a frame size of 1920×1080, and they’re 23.98 fps and H.264. I’ve imported and synced the sound and video files fine, but I’m running into a problem now that I’m starting to edit. When I cut two clips and put them together, there’s a bit of a lag on the first, which then speeds quickly into the second. The cuts don’t appear smooth and it’s hard to match cut properly. But when I scroll through the clips frame by frame, they appear fine.
I’m assuming this has something to do with the compression rate? I’m unfamiliar with Compressor, but I’m sure I could learn without much difficulty. If I need to run things through Compressor, would I have to do it with every single clip of video I have? (It’s a 15 minute project, so you can imagine how many takes there are!) Or could I edit, run the finished cut through Compressor, and make it play properly that way?
Or is there another problem altogether that I’m not seeing?
Any help or advice would be greatly appreciated. If I haven’t given enough info, let me know and I’ll provide more! Thank you so much for taking the time out to help me!

Search the forums for H.264. You will hear us saying time and again…as I am now…that H.264 IS NOT an editing codec. DO NOT edit H.264 in FCP. It is a delivery, and more recently, and acquisition codec. But it is not intended for use in editing systems. You need to convert the footage to ProRes for editing.
If these are from a Canon DSLR, and they saved the full card structure, then you use Log and Transfer, like I explain in this tutorial: Tapeless Workflow for FCP 7 Tutorial
If you ONLY have the H.264 files, then you need to use Compressor to convert the footage. Yes, this will take time, but it will save time, and sanity, over trying to edit H.264 in FCP.

Thank you so much Shane! Yes, I only have the files themselves, not the media from the camera. I’ll find some Compressor tutorials and spend some time converting everything. I appreciate the quick help, thanks a bunch!

Upon opening 5DtoRGB I am greeted with a prompt that reads as follows:
Missing ProRes Codecs
No ProRes codecs could be found on the system. Only DPX output will be available.I have FCP 6.0.3 installed on my 2.5GHz Intel Core 2 Duo running OS X 10.5.8. I have the file “AppleProRes422.component” in Macintosh HD/Library/Quicktime. Has anyone else had this problem and/or does anyone know how to correct it?

I am having the same problem at the same system setup (except I am having FCP 6.0.6). Any solutions?
