I have a speaker system connected via USB.
    Macbook Pro 2006 model

I can hear the audio very faintly through the speakers in my camcorder but many times it is almost silent.
I can capture video clip and when I play it back, the audio comes out loud and clear.

    The miniDV camera I am using doesn’t have a headphone jack-Panasonic PV-GS500

Should I buy another cheap camcorder so I can listen to audio during log and capture?

I believe that camera has AV connections, but you need a special cable (that should have come with the unit) that breaks out the audio and video connections. You should then be able to monitor the audio out while capturing. Look in your manual to confirm.
