Transitions and Sequences
Hi all,
I’m working on a long video (around 6 hours of recordings).
To make things simple, I distributed my clips in a number of “sequence”. This allowed to work “on a piece at the time”, without going mad.
Then, I created an extra sequence, containing all the other (nested) sequences in order.Two questions here.
1. Can this way of working be considered “professional” or should I do something different?
2. How to add transitions between the last clip of a sequence and the first clip of another one? If I drag and drop the transitions between the sequences, FCP claims I don’t have “enough material”.Please note I’m pretty new to FCP, so don’t exclude anything, even things that might be trivial for most of the users.

1. Opinions are subjective, but I do the same thing fairly often.
2. Your sequences need to be trimmed a few frames on the heads and tails to put the transition in. Once the sequence is nested onto the timeline, trim it back about 5 frames at the end, and then trim the next one 5 frames at the beginning. Drop a 10 frame cross dissolve between them. If you want longer transitions, you need to trim the sequences more. If trimming the sequence affects the message/pacing/etc., open up said sequence and add a few frames on whichever end is affected to compensate. -
If I try the “trim edit” in the “final sequences” – where I have all my nested sequences – FCP doesn’t allow me to trim, because of a “Media Limit on V1”.
If I trim the sequences from their own timelines, it still doesn’t allow me to drop the transition in the “final sequence” between the two sequences, even if I use a tiny transition and a huge trimming space.
I’m a bit lost here.Also, how do I check how many frames is a transition long? I can open it in the transition editor, but the timescale is in seconds. Not sure if there is any better way of checking/editing this…

don’t use the trim edit mode….personally I’ve found that mode pretty worthless.
In your final sequence, hover your cursor over the end of one of your nested sequences. The cursor icon will change. Now, click and drag the end of the nested sequence….a little yellow info box should pop up indicating how much you are now trimming the end, as well as the “new” duration of the clip/sequence.Repeat the process for the next, incoming clip/sequence.
as for duration of transition, if you double click the transition in the effects tab, it will load in the viewer. same goes for it you double click a transition on the timeline. If you look in the upper left corner of the viewer, you will see the duration of the transition. Most likely the default will be 1 second. Highlight, delete, and input the new duration. then drag from the viewer (see that little icon in the upper right) to the edit point.
