  • Viewing MOVs without FCP

Posted by Neil Parr-davies on November 19, 2009 at 10:14 am

    Hi All,

We have two macs running FCP7 and ingesting footage from Sony XD Cams, F350/F330. On a separate mac in the production office, I’d like to be able to view the ingested rushes but can’t play the movs in Quicktime – presumably because they are using FCP codecs.

Does anyone know if it’s possible to get a standalone player to view these clips (for Snow Leopard) or if I can download Codecs anywhere which would allow Quicktime to play these movs?

Thanks in advance for any replies.

    Neil

It seems that VLC can play them.
Not sure if ffmpgx can do it without FC, but you may try it.
    cheers,

Hi, thanks for the reply. Unfortunately, no joy.

    VLC tells me

    No suitable decoder module
VLC does not support the audio or video format "xdv3". Unfortunately there is no way for you to fix this.

    ffmpegx gives me this:

So, I don’t know any other solution than Calibrated Plugin.

Thanks all, that seems to work. Now all I have to do is shell out $80 – I take it there’s no other (free!) option?

[Neil Parr-Davies] “I take it there’s no other (free!) option?”

Not without spending TIME converting the video to a codec that does not only come with FCP.

Weight the options. do a small test of converting and use the time that that clip takes to convert to figure out how ling it would take to convert all of it. If the time it would take you to convert it is worth more then $80 then just buy the program and move on with things.
