  Why do my mpeg4 exports look poor?

  Editing DVCPro25 in a 10-bit timeline. My exports to H.264 using quicktime conversion look awesome, but the same clip exported to mpeg4 using QT conversion looks really bad and blocky. I set all the quality-related menu choices to best, AFAIK, and still it looks like poop. Is this just something QT conversion is not that good at? I’ll try a test later today using Compressor instead, but I was just curious if this is a common occurrance.

  Hi Mark,
  That’s because H264 is a better codec that the “Apple MP4 Compression codec”.
  The last one was supported in QT6.
  H264 came with QT7.
  But you can make an H264 enveloped in .mp4 with MPGStreamclip: Export MP4.
  This was the option that yielded the best quality up to some tests of Andy Mees with H264

  PS:The standard H264 is part of the MP4 standard.

  What data rate are you using in each? As Rafael said H.264 is a substantially better codec.
