Archival / network solution
I’m looking into cheap solutions to manage assets. We do not own Final Cut Server, and our current setup is:
1 MacPro (with FCS) – using a 2TB CalDigit HDElement as project drive.
1 MacBook Pro (also with FCS)Additionally, we would like the ability for others (both remote and local) to view, add, and delete files that are used in the project.
We are mainly working on DV documentaries at the moment, and don’t need instant access to the heavy footage from past films. In other words, the HDElement should be enough to work as an online storage drive- and everything else can be locked away in a vault somewhere.
So do we need some sort of NAS card? Is there a danger involved with just running ftpd / network shares and keeping all the assets on the HDElement (and then moving them onto an external RAID for archival when they are no longer needed)?
On one foot it seems to me that the main danger is when two computers try to modify the same file at the same time…. am I on the right track, and is there a free (or cheap) solid solution to this?
Thanks…
