restoring back to native 16:9 aspect ratio from 4:3 sequence
Hi There,
I am a little bit new to FCP, but I made a film in a 24-hour film race competition with a fairly advanced user, and we’re both stymied by one particular problem.
We made a 4-minute film and shot on miniDV in 16:9 mode. Clips are fine and appear in the proper aspect ratio. But in the rush to make the film for this contest, we had to convert to 4:3, which we did in the sequence. So black bars in the sequence are apparent on the top and bottom.
Now we are trying to put it on YouTube and we need to get rid of the bars and restore back to 16:9. But it appears our sequence cannot be changed in terms of aspect ratio. We don’t want to re-edit. How on earth do we fix this? When we create a whole new sequence with the proper aspect ratio and copy and paste the 4:3 edited sequence, it’s just a stretched image with the black bars still there (eg: it’s not sourcing from the original clips, but rather the copied sequence with the incorrect aspect ratio).
Solutions anyone? We’d be more than grateful.

Create a new sequence with the correct aspect ratio settings.
Choose select all from the old sequence.
Paste the clips into the new sequence.
try it two ways; Let FCP prompt you for the sequence settings as well.

David forgot to tell you:
– Copy and paste the clips to a new sequence (16×9),
– Select all the clips and “Remove Attributes> Basic motion + Distort.
The clips will fit in the new canvas. You will loose any re-sizing/re-centering and distort that you may had applied.

Thanks everybody. I think we did what David suggested (his first suggestion) but it didn’t work, but rather “imported” the bars on the top and bottom to the new sequence. Perhaps this further step will remove that… *crossing my fingers*

Thanks Rafeal,
I did forget to mention the remove attributes part. Just right click the clip in the timeline, remove the attributes for that clip then copy, select all and paste the NEW attributes into all the clips.
