  • Building a FCP system; suggestions?

Hi! Im looking into building a FCP system. I’ve spoken to several friends about it and have come up with the list below. In my world I wont have decks for capturing footage; external hard drives with media will be provided to me and I’ll copy it off to my computer. Much of what I’ll be editing will be XDCAM HD, and DVCPRO100. Here’s what I plan to purchase:

    •Refurbished Mac Pro 2.66GHz 8-Core Intel Xeon with Two 2.66GHz Quad-Core Intel Xeon “Nehalem” processors, 6GB (6x1GB) of 1066MHz DDR3 ECC memory,640GB Serial ATA 3Gb/s 7200 rpm
    18x SuperDrive (DVD±R DL/DVD±RW/CD-RW),NVIDIA GeForce GT 120 with 512MB GDDR3 memory

•More RAM; suggestions on how much? In what size chips and error correcting ones for that matter?

•Storage; Two internal 1TB SATA Seagate drives striped. When a project’s done I’ll media manage to an external drive. Argue with me if you feel external drives are the way to go; brand/sata card; I’m all ears.

•AJA LHi capture card. I’m buying this so I have more processing speed and can spit out HDMI video to client monitor. Also if need be I can capture with it. Comments on the Black Magic products?

•The sales guy at B&H likes the HP LP2475W 24″ LCD for me as my edit screen. I’m in the mindset to have a single screen vs the dual monitor setup. Would like to know what others do.

    • A set of Mackie MR5 speakers for monitoring.

What’s the best way to adjust levels on the sound coming out of the computer going to the speakers? Should I buy the AJA Breakout box and wire the speakers to it? I presume I’d have to so that picture/sound would be in synch. A small mixer in the loop to adjust levels?

Anything I’m missing hardware-wise? What would you do for a client monitor? Get a small TV that decodes the audio coming from the HDMI? Thanks.
