After Effects vs. Fusion
Posted by Shaun Lavery on January 28, 2008 at 11:43 pmHello
Just got a quick question. I’ve been working mostly with After Effects creating and rendering videos. The layout of it and workflow that I have seem is no problem for me. However, the render times of it has been a little rediculous. Lately I’ve been hearing of Fusion and that the render times of that blow AE out of the water
Just curious if anybody has had any experience with Fusion or even some other graphics program that breaks down render times. Preferably Mac based, but PC as well.Jimmy Brunger replied 18 years, 5 months ago 4 Members · 4 Replies -

…sorry for the useless post, it had to be done.

No problem. It helps.
As for the fusion forum… is that like working on a downloadable Avid system to your computer vs. working on a full Avid system purchased wholly? -

January 29, 2008 at 8:13 amI think Tony was making a joke. When he said Fusion forum, I think he meant something like VFX Talk or Pigs Fly.
Basically it’s a common answer to the question “Which system is better X or Y”. If you ask a group of people who habitually use X you’ll probably get the reply “X”.
My agnostic advice for any tool is to ask myself “What can I do now, what do I need to do in the future and will my current system let me do that in the best way?”. Nothing beats a hands-on demo supported by a good demo artist, so long as you have identified your needs beforehand.
Cheers,

January 29, 2008 at 1:13 pmFusion is a totally different workflow to AE. AE is layer-based and Fusion is node-based, meaning quite a steep learning curve if you’ve not tried that approach before. That said, there are big pros and big cons for both…
AE is mainly a motion graphics package, with some compositing/grading capabilities. You can do most things in AE eventually though. AE can use TONNES of RAM via Nucleo and lots of processors which should make rendering very quick.
Fusion is mainly a compositing/grading package, but has very good mograph tools and also a full true 3D compositing environment and some basic 3D modelling tools. AFAIK Fusion is TOTALLY multicore aware, not just with renders and previews like AE, which should make interactivity in complex comps much smoother. You can use most of AE’s plugins in Fusion aswell, however Fusion can only access a maximum of 4GB RAM and it will never be quite as smooth for mograph as AE is. It also costs more than 3 times as much as AE and doesn’t integrate aswell with other Adobe products (obviously)
Swings and roundabouts – I’d get both if you can so you have a more complete toolset.
If I could afford it and wasn’t going the Mac route soon then I’d buy Fusion in a flash. Only messed with a demo version myself.
If Fusion 64bit ever comes out and they made it for OSX aswell that would be something AWESOME.
