  FC Express crashing during capture

  Desperately seeking a solution to Final Cut Express (4.0.1) unexpectedly quitting during capture. Sometimes the capture is successful, but it crashes as many times as it works. I have a Canon HV20, shooting in HDV, settings are Apple Intermediate Codec 1080i60, and saving to a Simple Tech 320GB external harddrive. I’m on a newish iMac (OS 10.5.5). I’ve been around the block with Apple and the problem persists. Is Express not able handle HDV? Oh yeah, the program quits when I attempt to stop the capture. Any help would be most appreciated.

  How is your external drive connected to your machine?

  straight from drive to computer–USB port

  Ah, there’s the rub. Connect with firewire. USB does not provide the continuous throughput needed for video ingest.
