    Folks,

Hoping someone can help a newbie with that age-old problem of coughing/spluttering/babies crying during filming of a Nativity Play.

I was hoping to ‘dampen’ down the loud coughs (I sat very close to someone who had a cough throughout the performance). I’ve tried double-clicking on the soundtrack and using the pen-tool to adjust the levels (with varying success).

I was wondering if there are tips or tricks that can be used to improve the soundtrack using FCP not being overly familiar with the Audio Filters or FCP as a whole (could soundtrack pro be used instead/how would I export the s/track from FCP to Spro).

Any tips or tricks would be appreciated.

    Guy,

At the risk of sounding flip while you’re struggling, this reminds me of an old story about the great golfer Ben Hogan. When asked by an amateur player for a tip on how to make more putts, Hogan said, “Hit your approach shots closer to the hole.”

In your case you should have placed your mic closer to the source of the sound you wanted, or used a more directional mic, because there is no post-production secret sauce that can make unwanted sounds go away when they are recorded over and mixed with wanted sounds. Some reduction of background noise is possible, but that’s about it.

I’ve managed to read up a bit on Soundtrack Pro and have made some adjustments to the audio which has improved parts of the dialog which were low. Haven’t got rid of the coughs per se but used the Adaptive Limiter to reduce the impact.

Scouring for tutorials at the moment but as I said if any one has any tips on the coughing issue I’d be happy to hear them

If the unwanted sounds are happening during other audio you might try a channel EQ in ST Pro. You may be be able to dampen the coughs by notching out the the unwanted sound.

If the coughs happen when there is nothing else going on you could use the replace ambient noise feature in STP.
Hightlight a small section of clean room tone and then do set ambient noise
Hightlight cough and then do a replace ambient noise.
