  • Scale reszing looks bad vs. AE

Hello! So for my current project I am taking HDV footage captured at 1920×1080 via HD SDI and placing it into a SD NTSC timeline. I do not need to down convert the HD to SD – I want to keep my HD but rescale accordingly in FCP. This looks awful. I resized the footage in AE via scale percentage changes and it looks far and away better.

    1) Why?
    2) Can I get those results in FCP some how (magical plug-in?)
    3) Any work flow suggestions other than buying Automatic Duck?

    Thanks as always!

    [Christina Crawley]
    1) Why?”

FCP is notoriously bad at scaling. It just is.

Since you’re ingesting HD-SDI, I’m assuming you have a capture card. Try downconverting on ingest, using the card.

Or, transcode your footage in Compressor.

Just the ones above. Also, depending on your use of the footage, it could make sense for you to cut in an HD timeline, and downconvert on output.

Thanks for the reply Bill. I do not need to down convert the footage, I need HD in an SD time line, trying to find some thoughts on better scaling methods in FCP (if there are any).

I’ve had some success modifying my sequence settings – video processing – motion quality = fastest. This helped to reduce the hard jagged lines I’ve been experiencing.

Glad you found something that helped.

When I suggested downconverting, I meant downconverting on ingest – that way your HD footage becomes SD footage _before_ it goes into the timeline. Makes FCP’s poor scaling a non-factor.

Thats how we do it at my current gig.
