    I looking into storage solutions.

I see now sata 1tb drives are around $100.

    I have a mac pro.

I’ve seen eSATA cards for around $79 for 4 eSATA ports.

So can I get 4 1tb drives to work on a 4 port eSATA card, with a power supple and some cables?

Sorry I know there’s a Storage forum but there’s no general threads it seems.

    Thanks

There are four internal SATA bays inside your MacPro. One is used as the system drive, all are connecetd to an onboard SATA controller on the motherboard. You can fill the three additional bays with 1Tb SATA drives, and stripe them together in a raid-0 configuration without an additional SATA controller card.

    thanks for your response David.

I have all my bays full on my mac pro.

I’m doing some video editing and I wondering what my options are for storage.

So I’m looking to add storage onto my mac pro externally. There’s SATA Raid pci cards and eSATA pci cards. I hear Raid is faster but how fast does it need to be? My SATA drives are not on a Raid and there fine for 1080p real time editing.

Could I get a SATA raid pci card, 4 1tb drives, a power supply and 4 SATA cables and plug them in to my mac pro?

That seems a cheap way to go.

    under $500 after shipping probably?

    thanks for your help mate.

[jason leue] “I have all my bays full on my mac pro.”

    Got ya.

[jason leue] “Could I get a SATA raid pci card, 4 1tb drives, a power supply and 4 SATA cables and plug them in to my mac pro?”

You need a PCI-e SATA controller card for the Mac, SATA cables, and an enclosure — either a four bay SATA enclosure or four separate single bay SATA enclosures.

[jason leue] “under $500 after shipping probably?”

I doubt that. The drives are $100 to $130 each. I seriously doubt the $70 controller card you saw was a Mac PCI-e SATA controller card. Maybe you can find something like a used Sonnet card on Ebay for $150 if you’re lucky. And, if you’re really on the cheap, there are single-bay SATA enclosures for $40 each.

However, since you’re not striping them as a raid, you’re probably better off putting bare drives into separate firewire 800 enclosures and just daisy chaining them together.
