  Concerning a sort of “half-dissolve”

  Hello! First time posting here!

  My question revolves around dissolves; more specifically how to create a sort of, “half-dissolve” effect.

  What I mean is something that you see, let’s say, The Graduate, when Hoffman is floating in the pool. I believe it would show his face, then sort of only half dissolve away to another thing with his face still in the picture, then it would fully dissolve back to just his face.

  I have no idea if that was clear enough, heh! Basically what I’m trying to do is just have a character think back to something and I just want to have his clip still there during the “half” dissolve to something else, then it would fully dissolve back to him.

  If I understand you request correctly. One simple way to achieve this look is to place the clip you want to appear in track two and the main clip in track one. Using your opacity in the motion tab, you will need to key frame the “dissolve.” Set the opacity to 0 on clip in track two and set a keyframe. Move the play head forward 20 frames and set a keyframe and set the opacity to 50 (whatever level gives you the look you want). Move your playhead forward to about 20 frames from the end and set a key frame. Move to the end of the clip and set a final key frame and set the opacity to 0.

  There are other ways using mask that might look better, depending on how you video is shot, but this should get the look.
