  P2 card reader – snipe hunt?

  I am setting up a new FCP system that will ingest primarily P2 from an HVX200. Also learning FC as I go having been a long time Media 100 editor. I have been told by others also using the facility that there is a better way to import the P2 cards rather than firewire out of the camera. They have told me of a card reader similar to those used by digital still cameras. Have been beating up the internet looking for it but can only find a unit that will take up a drive bay in a PCI Mac. Since this a new system running in a new Mac Pro with PCI express this would not be an option. Have I missed something or have I been sent out on a snipe hunt?

  It saves you the time of tying up your camera to transfer, but it’s not any faster.

  Thanks for the reply. I’m aware of Panasonic’s options but what has been described is supposed to be much less expensive.

  There are no PCI options for Mac towers. There is the Duel Systems adapter for the Express34 slots on the MacBook Pros. The P2 card isn’t a standard PCMCIA card…it is a 4 card raided card. Standard readers can’t read P2.

  The best option would be the P2 Gear. Not only can you use it to injest to your computer, you can use it in the field by offloading to bus powered USB drives. AND…I love this…AND you can connect it to your computer via firewire, then SDI to a professional monitor for proper HD monitoring.

  Thanks, your information is much appreciated. Spoke with one of the two guys who sent me on this hunt over the weekend, told him about my search, and he still is adamant that the product is out there. The ball’s in his court we’ll stick with firewire out of the camera until he can show me the solution.
