  Question about segmenting files and “Log and Transfer”

  Hello,
  I am currently trying to import some footage onto an external hard drive and I’m having some problems. I have a Sony HDR-SR1, so I bring the footage into Final Cut by using the “Log and Transfer” window. In the past, this has worked fine, but the problem comes in when I try to use a PC formatted hard drive. I know the simple solution would be to simply reformat the drive, but eventually, these files need to end up on a PC and that’s not really an option for me with this project.
  Now, I found the option in “System Settings” that says “Limit Capture/Export File Segment Size To:” so I checked the box and entered a file size limit of 2000 MB. Unless I misunderstand, this should have taken my footage and broken it up into separate files that do not exceed 2 GB, no? However, when I tried to import, it gave me the same error about not being able to import any of the clips over 3 minutes or so.
  Am I missing something? Is there any other way around this? Here are some more technical details, if it will help:

  Camera: Sony HDR-SR1 (AVCHD Footage)
  Importing on: iMac running OSX 10.4.11 with a 2 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo and 2 GB RAM
  Editing will take place on: PC running Windows XP and Adobe Premiere Pro CS3
  Hard Drive: Maxtor 750 GB OneTouch 4 Plus formatted with a FAT32 file structure

  After reformating the drive to Mac Extended, you simply need to install MacDrive on the PC. End of story. Any other solution is just a big waste of time.

  Thanks for the suggestion. Sounds like it could be a good solution. However, before I make the investment, does anyone have a suggestion that wouldn’t cost me anything? It seems like Final Cut “should” have this feature built in.

  It seems that you are saying that FinalCut should support PC formatted drives….
  It is the system that is not seeing the NTSF formatted drive. not the Finalcut app

  The first way to let the mac system see a PC drive would be if you format your drive as a fat drive but in fat format your files must not be bigger that 4GB (That is a limit of Dos fat format)

  The next is to format the drive as a mac and use an app like MacDrive on your PC (as already sugested). MacDrive is an application on the PC for $39 that enables the PC system to see mac formats. The trial is free for 5days.

  Maybe making the mac system see the NTSF PC formatted disks is the other possibility. Again there are Apps that run on the mac that enable it to work with the NTSF format.
  Try MacFUSE 2.0 https://code.google.com/p/macfuse/
  and then add https://www.ntfs-3g.org/

  Then again if you have a net work the mac will read from NTSF disks but write to them.
  There are for shore other ways to skin the cat to get the job done
