Final Cut Advice Needed for HD Editing Setup
Posted by Kyler Boudreau on April 16, 2008 at 6:06 amHey Creative Cow forum – my first post. Yeah man!
Okay, if anyone would be so kind, what do I need to purchase in addition to a new Intel mac and Final Cut studio to edit uncompressed HD in Final Cut. When I say edit I mean handle FX, inputs and outputs for HD/SDI, HDMI in and out for ingest and monitoring, etc. The full deal…multiple tracks of HD – not just one. Not low end.
And on the MAC system configuration side, i’m assuming get an nVidia GPU with as much RAM as I can afford. Dual Quads, 4GB RAM minimum, etc.
How many disk arms for working with an HD timeline with NO delays? I’m guessing a minimum of four drives in a striped array?
THANKS!!!!

I heard rumor on the RED forum that Apple was going to swing to nVidia and ATI was going to disappear. Is that true or bogus?
Does the AJA KONA 3 help with FX rendering and such or is it just an I/O box?
Final question (sorry): how many streams of HD can I playback with the setup you recommended?

No clue, never heard that one.

It accelerates HDV and DVCPro HD work. It does all the necessary scaling on board so the processors are free to do more Fx and filters.

Depends on the flavor of HD. Anywhere from about 8 to 2 I suppose. I honestly never even pay attention to this. All I care about is how many filters can I use in realtime. If I can color grade in realtime, that’s all I care about. I don’t intend to re-create the Brady Bunch Open in realtime anytime soon.

hey, one other question: i’m editing a feature shooting on RED later this year. would the above specs be okay for that? they might shoot in 4K and i read that the KONA3 does up to 2K, but then RED is a different animal as it is with referencing the raw data files, etc.
BTW – that nVidia note on the RED forum was speculation from someone…that’s all. but it does seem valid since the new macbook pros are using nVidia, and on PC/Windows you have to use nVidia for both RED and Avid.

I know I’m responding to an old post of yours, however the question is still relevant… at least for me. I’ve upgraded to a MacPro and latest FCP. Just want to know what I need (cards, hardware, etc.) to get HiDef out of the Mac to a small HiDef monitor I recently purchased. Basically something that will provide HDMI out of the Mac.
Of course, as we all are, I’m moving away from SD. No longer wanting to monitor routed through a camcorder with RCA plugs into the monitor.
You seem to be the go-to guy about this kind of stuff, so your help is appreciated. I really need to get up to speed, so I would love a list. Thanks.David Van Hooser
