  • How can I get Final Cut Express to export using Compressor ?

Posted by Joe Garvin on March 17, 2008 at 5:26 am

I just upgraded from Final Cut express 2.0 to version 4.0
and was surprised to find that the new version will not allow me to export using compressor.

Can I upgrade compressor for use with FCE 4.0

    I’m running OS 10.4.11 tiger
    Final cut express 4.0

trying to export to compressor which came with my
    DVD studio Pro 3.0 program

I had no problems when I was using FCE 2.0 but I had to update my OS and found the FCE 2.0 did not work properly with tiger and was told that FCE 2.0 will not work at all with leopard

I liked working with compressor…. can I add it to FCE 4.0 as an export option. IF NOT what other options do I have that will give the the quality and reliability of compressor

    Thanks
    Joe

Compressor does not come with FCE. It now only comes with Final Cut Studio. If you have an older version of Compressor that came with DVD Studio Pro when it was a standalone application, which it no longer is, you might want to run some tests to verify that your version of Compressor will work with the OS and QT version you’re using. You can export from FCE as a QuickTime Movie, either self-contained or reference, and take that to Compressor for encoding.

    All the best,

    Thanks Tom for the info
In FCE 2.0 I always had the option to “export using compressor”
and it worked very well with DVDSP 3.0 ( I think that is where the program came from. ) But FCE 4.0 only allows me to export using Quicktime Conversion.

    Which leads to another question
IF I export as a QT movie and then compress to mpeg2….Would that not compress the DV file TWICE ? lowering the quality

IF I export using the QT conversion is that converting directly from the DV video file…and is the quality similiar to what I was getting from Compressor ?

    One more question….
What is the best mpeg2 converter that I can add to FCE 4.0 as an export option ?

    Thanks again everybody

QuickTime Movie export is a file copy function, copies the files, video and render files into a QuickTime file. There is no recompression.
