Mac Book Pro
I am thinking of upgrading my System, I am now using a g4 with FCP Studio 1 and want to go to Studio 2
Looking for some recommendations
My Choices
1. A 17″ Mac Book Pro (I like the idea of some Portability)
2. Mac Pro Quad or 8 Core (I guess best for expandability)Are people happy with the speed of MBP for FCP Studio 2
will it run Motion & Color without any Major Hiccups
will I also need a Cinema display? I have a SD Broadcast Monitor already.Or am i better off Sticking with a Desktop and the newest fastest thingamajig?
I mostly cut Short Form DV with firewire
But I know HD is just around the corner for me. (Clients are asking)Thanx for Any Input

You’re going to hear this from a lot of other folks, but the short version is, check Apple.com for system requirements.
All kinds of info there, including that Color’s minimum spec is a 17″ MacBook Pro….and that’s the *minimum* config on the list. HD in the mix? No fun.
Note too, only 4GB to install the apps themselves, with *another* 55GB for templates, etc.
Look carefully at the specs. There are thousands of people using FCS on laptops (including me)…but not all of it, and hardly to its best advantage.

Color will be sluggish on a laptop and the Maxtrox MXO is your only option to view on an external color grading display.
Motion will be sluggish on a laptop.
They will both work, but if you’re being paid to turn around projects, you want the fastest thing out there with a beefy graphics card. That’s a desktop.
Apple specs will show that Studio 2 will operate on a laptop and Final Cut Pro itself runs well on a laptop. But that’s a minimum system, especially if you’re editing in one location. Desktops will always be faster, especially when it comes to rendering.
