Transferring Projects
Hello forum users, I was recently assigned the task of transferring a lot of FCP projects to another hard drive. I see that FCP saves the projects into many different folders (Audio Render Files, Autosave Vault, Capture Scratch, Render Files, ect..). My question is this: what files should I save? Many people use the system and edit/capture in many different ways so I

Well, all of the captured footage SHOULD be in all of those folders, inside each you should see more folders with the project names. Just copying all of them should work. But if you suspect that there are other capture folders elsewhere, use SPOTLIGHT to search for the project name. And also for the other files like music, pictures, sound effects…those you might have to look for manually.

Good points all. I also find that the “Reveal in finder” option when you control click a clip works great to see if it’s in your capture scratch. Do that for any suspect clips like music or graphics you might have forgotten to transfer over to your scratch disks.

Open each project and then use media manager to move that one project the the new drive.
You say that some people do not set the capture scratch folder so I am betting that projects are all mixed together.
By using media manager will let you move all the files that are used with the project into one location on the new drive. Create a new folder with the name of each project on the new drive.
In the future you should make it LAW that each editor change location of the scratch folders to the proper project folder. If this is not done eventually somebody will delete an old project and any captured footage, render files etc from newer projects that are mixed in because things were not changed to a new project will also be deleted. Not a fun thing to deal with.
