    2.4g 20″ IMac
    Sony Hi 8 Analog Cam
    Seagate Free Agent 320gb firewire 400/usb/esata 7200RPM
    Dazzle DV Bridge

    Sony> to Dazzle>Seagate>IMac, all through firewire 400.

Trying to capture video directly to the Seagate external drive. Unfortunately the video freezes after a second or so (nothing crashes). The only way that seems to work is to capture to the IMac’s internal drive by going directly into the IMac’s sole firewire 400 port from the Dazzle.

Is there a specific way of connecting the above so I can capture to the Seagate External? If I connect the drive to the Imac via usb, would that be fast enough?

Can’t go IN and OUT of a Firewire port at same time

You can’t write video to a drive while ingesting it without using separate FW chains.

On a tower or laptop , this is an additional card

On iMac, must go to internal, than transfer

Your drive i also not likely 7200 RPM

Thanks for the quick response, I had a feeling that’s what I’d have to do. Per the Seagate box – 7200 RPM.

Most devices will daisy-chain. Get rid of the Dazzle. It’s always been garbage. Get something like a DataTek Video or a Canopus box.

    All the best,

[Richard Harrington] “You can’t write video to a drive while ingesting it without using separate FW chains.

Sorry, but that’s simply not always a given.
There must be thousands of FCP systems that daisy-chain the DV camcorder through the external FW drive and capture to that drive.
I’ve done it myself when assisting in projects on other editor’s iBooks, etc.

In fact, over the past few years, there have been many posts on the COW about laptop systems ONLY being able to consistently capture with the DV source daisy-chained via the external.

And I’ve read many times over to never, ever trust a Dazzle unit for capture to FCP.

Edit to say that I posted before reading Tom’s answer.

So, just “ditto” to what he said.

Many devices won’t Daisy Chain including AJA IOs all models

It is recommended that you NOT daisy chain input and output on same bus

Sure, I agree Dazzle’s are the least desirable.. but before telling her to pitch hardware already bought… I think a little troubleshooting is in order
