Capture problem
Hi,
When I go to capture video from my Mini DV camera into Final Cut it acts like it is going to capture the video then I get a message that says:
“Dropped frames were detected during the last capture attempt”
Any suggestions on how to fix this?

Stay away from Canon camcorders.But seriously, folks…
Without knowing any more info (does it ALWAYS do this with ALL tapes? what kind of camera? was the tape shot on this camera? etc.) can’t offer too much help.
Generically, you might want to dub the original tape to a new DV tape with two units connected via FireWire, then try capturing only the new DV tape.

It is a JVC video camera about 6-7 yers old, would it be a problem that it only has 12 bit sound?

Yes, tape was shot with this camera, I am new to final cut, I haven’t yet done much log and capture.
I have been able to successfully capture video off my camera at work, we are on final cut 5 there but at home I have final cut 6 and have not been able to capture anything successfully yet.
Drop frame thing – I need to do some reading of the other threads it sounds like.

I am beginning to think maybe I am having the trouble because I have a USB external hard drive and I think I need a Firewire hard drive. I have the setting set to put the captured video files on the USB external drive now.
Could this be it?
Thanks for your patience with me, I am struggling with this time code thing for some reason. I read some of the posts on time code but no real light bulbs went off in my head yet.

“USB cannot sustain the continuous high-speed bit-streams needed in video capture and playback.
Yes, you need to go with a FireWire external connection for the drive and 7200rpm drive-speed.

OK, I am off to the store now to get a fire wire external hard drive, 7200 connection speed. And I am going to check out all the video cameras too. I think I am going to try to get a new one. I need to learn what all the options are out there before I buy.
