What is two frames off, compared to what? Audio and video out of sync?

    Hi tom,

I’m capturing a whole tape of HDV footage from my sony z1u to my mac. There’s nothing wrong with the time code on the tape. Just when I capture it, it makes a new clip each time and in the browser it shows it skiped 2 frames. So when I edit or connect each clip to the timeline I can’t because of the 2 frames being off. It looks noticeabe like I pasted something. I went thru the FCP manual and did everything I could but its still there. So what’s up?

    Thank you for your time,

    Stephen Adams

Im still having trouble figuring out exactly what you’re saying. Are you saying that 2 frames of video don’t get captured and the separation between two sequential clips are 2 frames? If that’s what you are saying then I can’t think of much else to help you other than “welcome to the world of HDV”. Using firewire to transfer HDV is a lesson in patience and headaches when it come to timecode.

You could always try logging your clips with the exact timecode that you’re looking for ahead of time and then doing a batch capture – maybe then you’ll get all of the frames you’re looking for.

If I’m still misunderstanding what you’re saying, then please clarify. Thanks.

    Hi Paul,

Yes that’s what’s happening. FYI: I recorded a live performance and since the client wants unedited footage I just transfered all the material from the Sony Z1U to the FCP via firewire.

So when I “Capture Now” the whole tape footage ( video and audio), when its collected in the browser, it captures clips automatically but the captured clips are 2 frames off between EACH of them. So I have this whole set of clips captured and when I edit or connect each clip together in the timeline its looks jerky. Not good!

Anything else I do or any suggestions?

    Thank you so much,

    Stephen Adams

You’re lucky you’re working with that camera. On a JVC 720p30 you lose about five SECONDS on the shot change. That’s the downside of working with an MPEG-2 based format.

Here’s an alternative that should probably work for you:

In the Log and Capture window, click the capture settings tab and change the device control to non-controllable. Keep capture/input unchanged. Now, hit play on your camera and click capture now. This should get the whole tape as a single clip.. you can the chop into subclips if you need to or just keep the one clip for editing on to a timeline.

    Hi Paul,

I have FCP 5.1 on the capture settings tab there’s only a scratch disk button. Please advise.

    Thanks,

That’s correct. That’s all that’s displayed in the HDV capture window.
