  • Tape won’t play in deck for more than 2 secs

    Hey,

I have a Panasonic AG DV2500 deck and it won’t seem to play some JVC mini DV tapes that have come in. Well, it plays for about 2 seconds, freezes then turns to black. I can scrub through the footage, but smooth, continuous playback just isn’t happening.

I tested other miniDV and DVCam tapes and they play back fine. I hooked the deck up to FCP as well as going straight to a monitor and the same problem occurred, so it is definitely a tape to deck issue.

Is it possible they have recorded onto this tape in a different format that my deck can’t handle? If so, what format is it likely to be?

Normally Panasonic decks will not playback material that has been recorded in DVCAM. The formulation of tape, DV or DVCAM specific tape formulation, don’t matter, but if the material is recorded in Sony’s proprietary DVCAM format it doesn’t play correctly on non-Sony devices.

    All the best,

Actually the AG-2500 plays DVCAM just fine, as do all of our DVCPRO machines, and have for since 1997 shortly after DVCAM was released.

I have a feeling that perhaps the footage on the tape that doesn’t play maybe an HDV tape? Or there is something just seriously wrong with the tape and the respective recording. Can you go back to the camera that recorded it and have it play there?

    Hope this helps,

    Jan

Thanks for that Jan. I wasn’t aware of that.

    Hi guys,

Thanks for the info. I managed to play the tape on a P2 camera in the end and an HD deck (reading it as DV). Still not sure why our deck didn’t recognize it.

The tape did have a large number of TC breaks pretty close together which may have caused some trouble!
