    FCP rendering error, please help!!!

The system is an iMac running OS X with FCP for editing and iDVD 5 for burning. There is an external drive for data storage. Recently, when burning a project to dvd thru iDVD been getting error ‘There was a problem burning the project’ that’s it, no other error!! and nothing is written to disc.

The project has been rendered in FCP ok, create the menus etc in iDVD, drop in the mov file, it creates all the menus etc fine, the error appears after it has rendered the movie file. At first thought it was because the data was stored on the external drive, so rendered the FCP project and stored it on the desktop, same error appeared in iDVD.

Now the strange thing is, if the project is rendered in FCP WITHOUT chapters, it burns ok thru iDVD, as soon as chapters are put in it errors??

iDVD has been re-installed and the error still appears, have recreated the project same issue, have tried creating a dvd with a different project same issue. Have deleted the com.apple.pl file, same issue.

This worked fine on the last project that was created approx 4 months ago, there has been no software updates/firmware updates nothing.

At a total loss as to what has caused this, have now got 2 projects that cannot be burned and have more work on the way in. Putting it mildly it is a BIG showstopper and unless myself and my colleague can find an answer we are going to start losing business!!

Would appreciate ANY help in this matter!!!!

    Cheers,

    Richie,

You’ve done most of what I would have done to trouble shoot this. Here are some random thoughts that might trigger something.

Have you tried adding chapters in iDVD? Have you tried burning on another computer? Have you trashed FCP prefs? Have you repaired permissions on your boot drive? Have you moved the source file to another drive – perhaps the internal drive?

Although you can use whatever software you like for your business

    Hello again!!

Thank you all for your input on this issue, actually found out what was causing it. All the media was held on the external drive whilst iDVD was compiling the dvd.
Moved the media to the MAC h/d and it worked ok. Seems that iDVD likes the media to be held locally instead of elsewhere….
