  DVCPRO 50 to FCP5

  I am a Vegas user and will need to edit a short that I am going to shoot on a Panasonic SDX900. It will be shot on DVCPRO50. There seems to be all kind of hindrances to doing this in Vegas.

  My wife has a Macbook Pro with FCP5. I was thinking of editing the piece on her machine ,using external firewire drives, as I understand that FC is DVCPRO50 friendly.

  Is it true that I could just firewire from a DVCPRO deck into FC and capture the tapes? Will I be able to edit with no problems in FC? I would like to shoot 24pA and edit 24pA, is this possible in FC5? Is there a better option? What are the options with FC Studio’s DVD program?

  At some point I will probably be going film out.

  Any information would be appreciated.

  I just had a conversation with my DP on this coming shoot. He insists that, since we are going film out, we should use his HDX-900.

  Well, OK. I am looking at my wife’s MacBook Pro and going though Final Cut 5. It has the presets for DVCPRO HD. I also just found a article on Ken Stone’s site regarding DVCPRO HD and Final Cut. Sure sounds as though it will work.

  I need to run some tests with the HDX-900. The external storage setup we have for the MBP is a firewire 800 drive. If I capture the HDX-900 on the firewire 400 port and send it out to the drive via the 400 port, will I have a bottleneck?
  Will that work at all for the test?

  Would it be better for the shoot to get an express card, either firewire 800 or sata for external drives separate from the firewire ports?

  Reading the online manual for the HDX-900, I see that the HDX-900 does not support 24pA @ 720. Only at 1080. Would the data rate at 1080 be too high to capture and edit on the MacBook Pro?

  Shoot HD at 720. You can always extract 24 frames from that. THe data rates are low enough to edit with FW 800 drives on a macbook pro.
