Hi Group,
I have a new mbp – and have installed fcp studio need help re- system performance. After installing on internal HD I have 8.6 gb avail–
1. is it a bad idea to run computer with this little space on hd?
2. how would I move applications to an external hd, is this what I should do?
3. do I need to clarify further for you to help– I have a gig lined up for this weekend…Specs below. Thanks so much!

YES you should always leave at least 10% free on ANY hard drive.

Its not the applications that take up the space it is all the additional content that gets installed with them.
Do a search on the forum about moving additional content to a different drive, this has been covered before.

I have a sidebar question to this thread that I hope is okay. I’ve scoured the threads a bit and can’t find what I’m after. I’m new to CCow and in the process of preparing to go to FCE or FCP. I’ve been cutting for a while on Adobe Premiere due to hardware limitations on my present Mac HW (500mhz G4 tower). I have a better windows machine through work hence AP. I would like to go Mac portable either refurb Macbook Pro or new Macbook but realize the problems or limitations installing FCP on the Macbook which has integrated video card. Is it possible to install parts of FCP on a Macbook? I have come to believe the answer is no so I began to look at Macbook Pro G4 series recently. Will they support all of FCP? If so I’m looking at a 2.16 or 2.33 mhz with 2 gig of ram.
Lastly it seems that there is more flexibility with the older ports, 4 and 4.5 with non-Intel than with newer requring the UB version, am I right about that?

I think it’s foolish to purchase any non-Intel machine. Chances are very good that less and less of Mac software will work with it.

Tom thanks for your response. My fear in getting Intel machine right now was wondering if v4 (I have) will run on the Macbook 13.3 which I couldn’t find a consistent answer on. Will the version not run at all on an integrated graphics card machine or is it only Motion and the Color module won’t?

I just realized too that the Pro’s I am looking at on Gainsaver’s are Intel machines, was my mistake I thought they were older. Given that the Pro will handle the video requirements since it’s not integrated correct or am I misinformed about that? Thx for all Tom.

First off the original post here was a year and a half old you should have made an entirely NEW post.

A even BIGGER limitation on the new MacBook is that they have NO firewire on them.

If you get a intel Mac you will need FCP 5.1 or newer because anything older is NOT intel compatible.
There are no “technical solutions” to your “artistic problems”.

Zane thanks and sorry that I used this thread and didn’t start a new one as you pointed out.
I’m just trying to figure out best how do make this transition within the money that I can allocate for it. I had thought there was a firewire port on the Macbook but gather I was wrong. Now that I have confirmed the used Macbook Pro’s are Intel based I’m looking at that.
I appreciate your’s and Tom’s feedback. I’ll cut myself off this thread and any other questions/problems I’ll post anew. Thank you guys.
