Low Audio Levels
Can’t figure out why, after I capture footage, my audio levels are so low. Audio is coming in from a beta deck to a mixer to AJA Io to MacPro Dual 3GHz. Levels from the tape are set to 0DB on the mixer but register -18/-24 on the FCP meters. If I crank the levels from the mixer they still come in low but I have room to adjust them. Any ideas?

Have you run tone through the system? What does it read on the deck? What’s it read in the mixer? What’s it read in FCP?

Yes I have, deck & mixer read 0DB. FCP is not reading -12. If memory serves it is in the -18/-24 zone.

Doesn’t AJA have software that will control the levels when it digitizes the material?

I’m still new to the FCP/AJA arena, been with Avid for a zillion years. My AJA Io does have a separate control panel so that may be the culprit. This could also explain why my video controls are grayed out in the capture window. Man, it’s like learning video 101 all over again!

Yup, I’m getting the same problem here… 0 registers as -18 dBs. When I clip on my mixer, i get ard -6dBs on Final Cut, and it’s not funny when FCP 5.1 only has 12 dBs of gain (which isn’t so cool when occasionally i’ve super low recorded dialogue somewhere on tape). Can’t find the volume control from the AJA output…
