    Hi all,
I’m new to the site and new to FCP. Forgive me if this question seems basic; and if it’s been answered, a litle direction to the post would be great.

I have FCP 6.0 and my editor had FCP 5.0 -I have a non-profit 1/2 hour doc. with too many tapes to dump in his lap for the price so I want to log the footage on an external HD and lay it on the line for him so he can just do his magic with transitions, sound, graphics, etc. He is not in a postition to upgrade (he has too many big projects in the works on 5.0) and I have just been told that 6.0 is not backward compatable. The terms EDL and XML have been thrown my way but I don’t know how to use them properly..any help?

    newbie

If you are in the middl of a project, jut wait. XML and EDls are files that can be understood by different applications but are basically lists of shots. You export a list of clips with the IN and OUT points, but there are many other attributes and settings that, either are not included in the list, or being included are not understood by the other application, i.e: filters, transitions, motion etc. XMLs or EDLs can be very useful and time saving, but is not the same than just to open a project.
