  The short cut is actually control+u. The interface issue that I’ve seen that effects playback is if the canvas is zoomed in so that you see the blue sliders on your footage. You can reset this by selecting the canvas and selecting Fit to Window (or shift+z) or just scaling the footage to a percent small enough to make the blue scoll bars go away.

  It can also be an issue if another window is covering the canvas, but the first one is all most always the cause if interfaced related playback issues.
