HI. I was working with Final Cut Pro 4 and switched to Final Cut Pro 5 a number of months ago when I upgraded my computer. I did, however, keep using media that I had already digitized. My media has all been shot 16 x 9 (24p) but I have to admit that sometimes it was squeezed in the camera and sometimes just cut off.. anyway.. I just recently started having problems in new projects where there does NOT seem to be one standard for the way the footage is coming in.

1st of all–suddenly I am getting 16 x 9 (anamorphic) with a black border around it. This never happened before and only happens in the project not in the master clips.

2nd of all–some stuff I digitized recently and put into the same project DOES NOT get the black border but comes in to this same project as full screen 16 x 9.

Changing the little check mark in the format info that says anamorphic doesnt seem to do anything. Help please!
    Thanks!

    https://www.kenstone.net/fcp_homepage/understanding_16_9.html

This is an older article but the principles apply.

Things that might be helpful to know…

When you add a piece of footage to a sequence, FCP may make adjustments to the footage to make it work in that time line. For instance if you have a DV 4:3 sequence and add clip that is DV with the anamorphic box checked, FCP will adjust the scale and aspect ratio of the footage to letterbox the footage within the 4:3 frame of the sequence. Thus you would have black above and below the footage when it is displayed in the Canvas. Reference the above article for how letterbox and anamorphic differ from one another.

When weirdness starts to occur with clips that have been added to a sequence…

Double click the clip in the time line to load it into the Viewer.

Investigate if anything has been changed or added under the motion tab and filters tab. These will be your clues for trouble shooting.

If you want to look at your current sequence settings, highlight the sequence and hit Command-Zero. Changes you make in this dialog will only effect the current sequence.

If you want to look at the properties of a particular clip highlight it in the Browser and hit Command-9.

Sequence and clip setting should match, unless you have no choice, or are shooting for a particular effect.

    Good luck.
